Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of the present perfect in the context of a conversation about showing our emotions in the workplace.

Procedure

Warm-up (6-10 minutes) • Establish rapport and connect the student to English

Greet the student and ask about her weekend. Clear up any question she might have about the Present Perfect. Review the use of the Present Perfect presented in the previous class. Present the objectives of this class.

Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • Contextualise the lesson

* Show the student a picture with three people answering the question: "How was your weekend?". Ask these questions: How do you feel about these people? What do you think about their answers? * Show the student a list of emotions (anger, sadness, joy, jealousy, fear, anxiety) and ask the question: Are these emotions acceptable to display in a professional environment in your culture? If so, in what situation would they be appropriate?

New concepts (40-50 minutes) • Introduce a new usage for the Present Perfect

* Show the student the diagram with the uses of the present perfect and present a new use: life experiences. * Ask the student: HAVE you EVER EXPERIENCED this emotions at work? HAVE you EVER WITNESSED someone displaying any of these emotions at wok? * Watch the video from the lesson. Ask the student to give a summary of what she understood. * Introduce new vocabulary: - being stoic Have you ever been in a situation where you didn't show any emotion? Have you ever felt as if you were paralysed and couldn't express your feelings? We can say then that you were being stoic. - looming Do you have to present any kind of report at the end of the month? Today is January 30th and most people have to present a report to their bosses by tomorrow or they might be in trouble. We can say that the looming deadline can make people feel stressed. * Watch the video again and ask the student to answer some questions to check for general understanding of the topic. * Have a conversation with the student about the appropriateness of showing our feelings at work. * Ask her some questions using the present perfect to talk about experiences. - HAVE you EVER HAD to help a co-worker who was having a bad moment at wokr? - HAVE you EVER GIVEN a speech / talk about Emotional Inteligence in the Workplace?
