Procedure (30-43 minutes)
Three quotes about globalization are presented to students, and they are asked a number of questions (p. 55 - activities 1 and 2) to activate schemata and generate interest in the topic. Students discuss the ideas together and then share their answers in an open class through a show of hands. Then, students are asked two questions to get them engaged in the topic of the text through which they will be exposed to the target language. P. 56 - Activity 1
Students are asked to skim the first text to identify the three components of a paragraph. Then, they are asked whether they believe the paragraph to be explanatory, process or argumentative. They are asked to do it individually, then check in pairs and share it with the whole class. p.56 activity 2a They are then asked to repeat the process for 3a.
Students are then told through the question instructions that using pronouns improves the organization of the paragraph by avoiding the repetition of nouns. They are then asked to scan the text for the pronouns and match them to the nouns they replace. p. 56 activity 2b
Students are asked to identify what each pronoun in text 3a refers to. Students do the activity on their own, pair and then share. Students then are asked to reorder the different parts of a paragraph, and then they should find what the pronouns replaced.
Students are then given a handout with three paragraphs. They should identify the topic sentence for each paragraph. Then, they should mention what each pronoun in each paragraph replaced. Ss do the activities on their own, pair and then share.
Students are asked to work in pairs to brainstorm what activities have changed their lives. They then should choose one invention and prepare a short presentation to the class explaining why it changed the world.
