Description

In this lesson, students will learn about the second conditional through guided discovery based on a reading text about a street questionnaire for a hypothetical question. The lesson starts with a discussion about what would they do if they were invisible for a day. Then, followed by a jigsaw reading where students read and relate to the comments of people. Finally, there is some controlled practice through sentence formulation and free practice via speaking games.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of If second conditional in the context of Hypothetical situation questionnaire.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of about Moral dilemmas " what would you do?".

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will 1- Display the PPT/ ask the students to open their book/ give Ss Hand-out. 2- ask the Ss to work in pairs and think about the answer to the following question: " what would you do if you were invisible for a day?" 3- SS start to share their thoughts together. 4- Follow up and take notes for the errors and mistakes in the target language.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher will : 1- ask SS to read the 6 People's comments on the question. 2- ask students to work in pairs and relate to the comments by choosing the most similar comments to their answers and the most interesting comments. 3- collect some opinions as a whole class.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher will ask students to reread the comments and: 1- decide if the talk is about imaginary or real situations. 2- display PPT and ask them to choose if the sentences are Real or imaginary. a- I'd get a first-class ticket to Cuba. ( Imaginary) b- I'll definitely go to Cuba one day. ( Real) 3- read again and underline would + verb in the comments. Which verb form comes after would? Would+ Inf. Verb

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher will clarify the structure using the following CCQs : read the sentence and identify the structure: 1- I would get a first-class ticket. (the imaginary situation) Sub+ Verb+ comp. 2- If I were invisible, I would rob a bank. IF + sub + past simple verb, Sub + would+ inf. Verb.(or the opposite) 3- Negative form: If + Sub + Be. verb+ not / If + didn't+ Inf, Sub+ Would+ not+ inf. verb. If I weren’t invisible, I wouldn’t rob a bank. If you didn’t talk too much, people might like you. People mightn’t like you if you talk too much. 4- Interrogative: What+ would + sub+ inf + If + sub+ past simple? Would + sub+ inf.verb+ if+ sub+ past simple? CCQ: watch the video and fill the gaps with verbs in the suitable tense.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1- The teacher will a- display the worksheet or share the online worksheet link with the ss, then ask them to fill the gaps with suitable past simple verbs. b- ask students to check answers in pairs. c- Follow up and take notes (if needed). d- display the model answer/ or ask students to share answers as a class. e- provide feedback and error correction. f- provide a second round of teaching if needed. 2- Use the SB CP. (depends)

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Option 1: The teacher will 1- ask students to use the SB/ look on PPT and read the moral dilemmas and decide what would you do. 2- share answers as pairs. 3- follow up and take notes for accuracy mistakes. 4- provide accuracy feedback. Option2:" complete the sentences with 2nd conditional" The teacher will divide the class into 4 groups and 1- display online game. 2- ask each team to choose a number. 3- each team answers only 1 question each round. 4- only one team wins each round.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

How would your life be different/ how would life be different? 1- T will ask SS to think of things they have/ things in life. then think how would their lives/life be different if they didn't have them. 2- T will hand out a sheet to support them with ideas if necessary. 3- T follows up and takes notes. 4- provide feedback, fluency, and accuracy.
