Procedure (35-43 minutes)
Check the h/w. Focus ss on the words "scattered" on the board. (new vocabulary) ask them to help you to tidy the board and classify the words.Ask them how they can do it.
Draw a table with word classes and put the words in the right columns according to the part of speech. While classifying, elicit the features of each word class. (nouns- names of objects, adjectives- describe the nouns, verb- action words, adverbs- describe the verbs, pronouns- replaces the nouns, prepositions - shows the position, conjunctions- joins, words or sentences) Ask sts what they should do if they don't know the meaning or the part of speech of the word. What can help them? Dictionaries
Handout dictionaries. Let them have a look and tell what information they can find in dictionaries. ( definition, synonyms, antonyms,part of speech ) Write a word scullery on the board and demonstrate how they can find it in dictionary. Then write the word compartment and ss do the same in pairs. Elicit what the synonyms are. Then ask where sts can find them easily. Thesaurus gives only synonyms of the words.
Hand out thesaurus and ask them in pairs to find synonyms for the words in ex A p 7. Monitor, but don't interfere. see how well they can do it themselves. If there are ones who are struggling give them clues or show one example, Take FB, ask what synonyms they have found. H/W - use the synonyms in the sentences
