PRE-INTERMEDIATE LEVEL level

Description

In this part of the lesson, the focus will be on 2 listening exercises and vocabulary related to going out, dating.

Materials

Abc hand out with 2 listening exercises
Abc 2 audio texts belonging to Straightforward, pre-intermediate student's book
Abc transcript of 2 audio texts

Main Aims

  • to improve the students' listening skills and practice words related to going out, dating

Subsidiary Aims

  • to give students practice in speaking for fluency, to make them familiar with some familiar expressions (gorgeous, dunno)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students: they will relate to their "national heroes" (cultural awareness) and will chat about them

I will put some picture of famous people on the WB (Spongebob, Tarkan, Madonna, Shakira and Atatürk) and ask them who these people are. I will elicit info ( "who would you like to go out with, where would you go with them, what would you talk about with him or her..) Then, they will write down 3 names of famous people and I ll make them stand up and they will walk around and talk about their idols with the other students.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Since I find the texts quite difficult for the students (due to the speed), I will do some eliciting , concept check questions: , (cheap - xxxx ; morning, afternoon xxxx ..... , breakfast lunch xxxx, tonight I'm free -- tonight I'm xxxx , Thursday, Friday, xxxx, xxxxx ) .. Then I will hand out the texts and tell them to have a look at the four names (Ruby, Davina, Patrick and Stuart). I will ask them to pay attention during the 1st listening and figure out who's speaking to who and what they are talking about)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

They will listen to the 2 audio texts and answer the easy questions. (gist) .. first in pairs, then WC

Listening Nr. 2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The questions in ex 2 are more complicated and detailed, so I will ask the students to read the sentences in exercise 2 before the 2nd listening. I will hand out the transcript before they listen to the audio a second time. Then they will answer the questions of ex. 2 in pairs and then WC.

Post-Listening (3-4 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the audio text and expand on what they've learned

I will write some questions on the WB. How old were you on your first date? Were you nervous? What do you think of meeting your husband / wife / boyfriend / girlfriend online? They will answer in pairs and if time permits , also WC
