Procedure (45-55 minutes)
PREDICTION/ BRAINSTORM: Teacher starts the lesson by showing a collection of images, and ask the entire class what each image depicts individually, and as a collection, what topic they point to. FB: After students answer, teacher confirms the topic— Sharing things one can't live without.
READING. Teacher provides students a infographic about a survey within the context of things people can't live without, which contains useful language related to the topic. The teacher nominates 4-5 students to read the parts of the infographic. Then, the teacher asks students the following questions: l Do the results surprise you? 2 Do you think the results would be different in your country? 3 What do you think would be in the top ten in your country? Students have a slide where they answer these questions. Next, students say their answers in Open Class Feedback.
MEANING/FORM/PRONUNCIATION COMMUNICATIVE GROUP TASK: Teacher has the students go to the correct slides on Google to complete first a matching task between linkers in conversation and their uses, some of which may be new to students. FB: Teacher provides answer key. COMMUNICATIVE GROUP WORK: Then, students work together again to complete an assorted task on form. Teacher instructs the students clearly on how to complete the task. FB: Teacher goes over this slide carefully and provides feedback. PRONUNCIATION: Teacher shares a slide with the linkers and the word stress and proper pronunciation of: actually, in in other words, to put it another way, what I mean is, as I was saying, anyway, anyhow.
SPEAKING TASK 1: Teacher shows a photo of a celebrity and asks students: What do you think they can't live without? Students type their answers on the slide in a small box that the teacher enabled. Students share their answers with the class. SPEAKING TASK 2: Teacher tells students to list 3 things they can’t live without, write three sentences using 1 linker to get someone's attention, 1 linker to paraphrase and 1 linker to return to a previous topic. Students use 1 linker in each sentence .Each student has a slide to do the speaking. Once students have completed the activity, they say their sentences.
Point out the good use of the language that students had during the lesson and do some correction where students have language related problems.
