TP6- Reading- The Day I met Keira

Description

In this lesson, students practice the sub-skills of reading for gist and reading for specific information in a text about an actress, Keira Knightley. The lesson starts with a lead-in about Keira Knightly and her movies. This is followed by two reading activities for gist followed by a reading activity for specific information. Some time linkers will be introduced for students as a preparation to the speaking task. Students will practice guided speaking in the form of asking and answering some questions in pairs. Then, feedback will be given.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have practiced reading for gist and reading for specific information in the context of meeting a celebrity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1) Show photos of Keira Knightly and some of her movies. 2) Ask students the following questions: Who is she? What is her job? Have you seen any movies for her? Do you like her? 3) Try to make sure that they know how to pronounce her name correctly. 4) Show students a picture of a famous Egyptian actress and tell them I met her before. ask students the following questions: Have you met a famous person before? Would you like to meet any famous person?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1) Display on the screen the illustrations of the text. 2) Display the following question on the screen (prediction task): - The passage is about a) meeting a famous person b) meeting a family member c) meeting a friend 3) Students make predictions and I elicit answers form them without giving them the correct answer. 4) Pre-teach the following vocabulary: crowded - empty - theatre

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1) I will ask students to read the text quickly in 3 minutes. 2) Students will check if the predictions they made were right or wrong. 3) Students practice reading for gist by doing exercise1 (putting the pictures in order). 4) I will do a demo by eliciting from them the order of the first and second picture. 5) Students work in pairs. 6) I will reveal the answer key. 7) Students will do another reading for gist task (exercise 3: matching the title with the paragraph) 8) I will do a demo by eliciting from them the answer of the question. 9) Students work individually then work in pairs to check their answers together. 6) I will reveal the answer key.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1) Students will practice reading for specific information by answering exercise number 2 ( Write true of false and correct the false sentences.) 2) I will give students a demo by eliciting the answer of the first two examples. 3) Give students the handouts of the questions and ask them to read the questions in 2 minutes before re-reading the text. 3) Students will work individually then they will work in pairs to check their answers. 4) Answer key will be given when they finish checking.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1) Students answer exercise 4 as a guided discovery activity for the time linkers. 2) Elicit from students the difference in meaning between the 3 expressions. 3) Write the time expressions: after, when and then on the board. 4) Students answer exercise 5 after doing a demo with them. 5) Do a demo with students for exercise 6. 6) Use the time expressions on the board while doing the demo. 7) Give students two minutes to write short notes to answer the questions in exercise 6. 8) Encourage students to use the time expressions while speaking. 9) Ask ICQs - Are you going to write long sentences or short notes? Short notes - Will you work alone or in pairs? Alone - Are you going to use these expressions (pointing at the board)? Yes 10) students work to ask and answer the questions in exercise 6. 11) Teacher monitors and gives delayed feedback and some error correction after they finish.
