Description

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify some contributions to science in the context of women in science. They will also be able to practice a speaking activity on different ways to encourage girls to take up science as a career.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows ss some pictures of inspiring people and asks them to discuss in pairs which of them inspires them the most, why? T asks ICQ: are you going to choose one person or more? One person Do you have the same answers or different? different answers.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T pre-teaches ss some useful vocabulary by asking them to match each word with its definition. T enocurages ss to work in groups of 3 or 4 and encourages them to use dictionaries. T monitors and assists when needed. T conducts whole class feedback. T then asks ss to work in groups and fill in the blanks to make sure they understood the meanings of the new vocabulary. T monitors and helps when needed. T conducts whole class feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks ss to watch a video about 5 women in science and asks them to write the names mentioned. T asks ICQs: how many women are mentioned in the video? 5 what are you going to write? their names. Are you going to write anything else? no, only names T plays the video and asks ss to write the names. T asks ss to check their answers with their group. T conducts whole class feedback

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T shows ss a slide with some contributions made by these women in different fileds. T tells ss that they are going to watch the video again and identify each contribution done by which scientist. T asks ss to highlight the keywords in each sentence to be able to focus while listening. T checks the keywords with the ss. T asks ICQ: how many contributions are there? 4 what should you write? name of the scientist. T plays the video and monitors. T pauses the video when needed to help ss understanding the task T asks ss to check their work in groups. T conducts a whole class content feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T tells ss that they are going to practice a speaking activity which is similar to the final speaking test. T introduces the task by setting up students in groups of 3. T shows ss the prompt and asks them to discuss these different ways to encourage girls to take up science as a career. T gives ss some useful language to be used during the discussion. T asks ss to discuss in groups of 3 for 2 minutes. T monitors and stops ss when time is up. T asks each group to reach a decision together in one minute.
