To provide clarification and practice of language used for agreeing and disagreeing politely in a conversation.

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation or debate in the context of agreeing or disagreeing politely

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greet Ss. T shares the screen and opens the presentation (google slides). T shows 2 images to set the context: ---A picture of two hands, one doing thumbs down and the other own thumbs up. ---A picture of a business meeting where everyone is raising their hand except one person. Ask the Ss: What is the similarity between the two images? (Nominate 1-2 Ss) A) Both Images represent disagreement. T shows 2 more images to provide contrast: Ask the Ss: What is the similarity between the two images? (Nominate 1-2 Ss) A) Both Images represent agreement. T presents the topic to the class: Agreeing and disagreeing politely. ---T asks students to pronounce Agree or Disagree.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T introduces the Gist Task to Ss: ---Listen to the following audio: Q: What is the conversation about? A: They are discussing kids eating behaviors. Q: What is happening between Colin, Val, and Amanda? A: They are having a disagreement. CCQ: What is a disagreement? A: When someone is not in favor of someone else's opinion. _____________________ T introduces Intensive Task to Ss: ---Listen again to the discussion between Colin, Val and Amanda. Answer to the following Task. ---Demo the task. ---Share task with Ss via chat box. ---Send Ss to BR in pairs/groups. (2 min) ---Show Key Answers to Ss. ---Tell Ss to compare their answers. When the task is complete Ask Ss if they have any questions. >If necessary, play the recording again<

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T shares the screen presenting selected Target Language (TL): ---Are they ways of disagreeing (D) or agreeing (A). ---T asks Ss the meaning and pronunciation of the sentences presented. ---Mark each sentence with A or D correspondingly. T asks Ss if they have any questions before proceeding. T presents the BUT scenario where a phrase can be used to disagree. e.g. I see what you mean, BUT I think it's better to let them eat when they want. e.g. I suppose that's true, BUT it can be dangerous for a 5-year-old to help in the kitchen. _______________________ T presents the TL again to the Ss: T goes over the form of the sentences. Ask Ss if they have any questions before proceeding.

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T tells Ss they are going to apply the TL to a task. T opens the task and presents to Ss reading instructions. Fill in the gaps with a phrase from the word bank. There is more than one answer: ---Demo the first question for the Ss. ---Tell Ss to do it individually for 2 minutes. ---Share form with Ss via chat box. ---Send Ss to BR to discuss their answers in pairs. (2 min) When the time is up show the key answers to the Ss. Ask Ss if they have any questions before proceeding.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T presents a commutative task to Ss for freer practice using the TL. T gives instructions to the Ss: ---You will think about the next question and decide if you agree or disagree. ---Share your opinion with your classmates in BRs. ---Remember to use the phrases. T provides Ss with prompt for activity: ---Val thinks TV and video games make children violent. Do you agree or disagree? ---Send Ss to BR ( 3 min) When they come back nominate Ss to share their opinions with the class. ---Ask Ss if they agree or disagree. T provides Ss with second prompt for activity: ---Amanda thinks children under the age of ten shouldn't be allowed to have smartphones. ---Send Ss to BR (3 min). When they come back nominate Ss to share their opinions with the class. T provides DEC to Ss. Ask Ss if they have any questions before finishing the Lesson. T Thanks Ss.
