Description

In this lesson students will learn how to write a film review.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a a film review in the context of a couple of popular films: 007 skyfall and Shrek.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a gist reading practice using a model film review in the context of a famous film: 007.
  • To provide clarification of langaugeused for writing a film review in each part o the text accurately.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will elicit ss to share their ideas about the following questions: 1) Do you like movies? What type of movies do you like? 2) Do you read recommendations of movies before buying your tickets? Throught some pictures, it will be visually attractive to them so they will feel free and comfrotable to participate. Also, learners will figure out who will the text talk about. (James Bond)

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Model analysis will take place in this part of the stage where learners will identify parts of the text and the main puropuse of it, through guided discovery and using the following CCQs: T will display the slide number 3, in which a film review is modeled to the students. T will say: "We will read a text about James bond and one of his most famous and recent films. " You have 1 minute to read the text and identify the answer to the question on the top of this slide" Question (Gist task) : What’s the purpose of the whole text? After that, ss will have a minute to participate and share the correct answer. T will display the slide number 4 and they will have some seconds to write the correct answer in the chat. Once the gist and main aim was clarified, we will move straight forward to layout analysis and the meaning and use of ach one using the following CCQs: 1. What type of information is the text describing? It recommends and express a personal opinion or point of view of the film . 2. How many paragraphs can you identify? 5 3. What sentence help you to identify the conclusion?I would highly recommend …. 4. 1. What information does the first paragraph contain? It describes features of the film: author, genre, director. 5. What’s the purpose of the sentences in bold? Help us to identify parts of the text. 6. What’s the purpose of the final paragraph? Get a conclusion of the whole text.

Useful Language (5-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T will say: " Once we have discovered the main purpose of the text which is recommend and express our point of view of a film and learned each part of the text we will learn some phrases that will help us to produce our own review." T will display slide number 7 in which ss will identify the main purpose and use of each language item. Using the following CCQs as a guiadence: 1. Is one of the best.. Does this phrase appear in the beginning, middle or ending of the text? Yes, in the begging. 2. Released in … Is it formal or informal? Would you use this phrase in the beginning or ending of the text? 3. The plot involves… In which part of the text should you use this phrase? 4. The film is set in … Is it part of the conclusion or body part? 5. I would highly recommend… Will you use this phrase as part of the conclusion? Finally, T will do brainstorming eliciitng adjectives, useful language and vocabulary that ss may use while writing the file. T will provide and model a brief introduction so ss will continue writing the rest. In the slide 10, ss will be given a set of instructions in order to start producing.: 1.Using the introduction, continue writing a review about Shrek film. 2.Use language appropriately. 3. Use the checklist as a guidance. 4. Be aware of some comments you’ll receive on the bottom of the slide. T will monitor their progress through the comments chat below.
