Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Pre-Listening (14-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss work together in pairs to match the half sentences. Get Ss to check their answers with other groups (peer-checking) Take w/c feedback Give the Ss the pictures and the words from ex 2 & the definitions from ex 3. Get them in small groups to match the pictures with the definitions and with the words by sticking them on the walls. When they are done, ask them to check other group's walls and compare their answers with them. Show the key through the projector Check Ss understand the differences between some of the different kinds of accommodation – e.g. semi-detached and terraced houses by asking concept checking questions. (Use the CCQs in the Vocabulary Analysis page) Model and drill the problematic words. (suburb, flat, semi-detached, terraced) Get Ss to work in small groups to match the words and the pictures from Listening ex1. Each group will have a set of pictures and words. Show them the uncut version through the projector. Ask concept checking questions to check the understanding of the meaning(Use the CCQs in the Vocabulary Analysis page). Ss in pairs then discuss if they’d like to live in any of the houses and say why/why not. Take w/c FB and get them to share their ideas.

While-Listening #1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist information from the listening task

(Don’t pause between recordings) Get Ss to peer-check their answers Ask them to come to the w/b and write which type of accomodation each person talks about.

While-Listening #2 (11-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed information from the listening task

Focus the Ss on the question in ex 3. Give Ss a chance to discuss in pairs what they remember from the listening about the best and worst things about where the people live. Give them a chart to take their notes on Play the recording again and Ss listen and take notes.
