Main Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of a news report in the context of news stories.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about a fraud fugitive in the context of news stories.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. In pairs, take turns asking and answering the following questions: a. Have you ever been a victim of fraud? If yes, what happened? b. Do you have any advice on how to avoid fraud?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

1. Read the questions in 8A. 2. Get back to the news report, and find and underline the answers! 3. Check your answers with a classmate. 4. Check your answers with the teacher.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Part One: 1. Read the headline in 8B. 2. Read sentences 1-4. 3. In pairs, get back to the news report and find examples. 4. Highlight the words/examples. 5. Check your answers with other classmates. 6. Share your answers with the teacher. Part two: 1. In pairs, look at the time linkers in 9A. 2. Get back to the news report and find examples of the time linkers in the box. 3. Highlight the examples. 4. Compare answers with another classmate. Part three: 1. Read the sentences in B and C. 2. Complete the sentences with the correct time linker. 3. Check your answers with a partner.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

1. In pairs, read the headlines in 10A. 2. Choose a headline and write six questions asking for information about the story. 3. Give your questions to another pair of students. 4. Read the ideas in 8B one more time. 5. Look at the questions and write a 100-150 words short news report. 6. After you're finished, compare stories. 7. Share your ideas with the teacher.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

At this stage, the teacher will provide feedback on the target language's accuracy, skill and usage.
