Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of past simple and past continuous in the context of conspiracy theories.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about Nelson Mandela's release from prison in the context of conspiracy theories.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In pairs: 1. Who was Nelson Mandela? 2. What Happened to him? 3. When did he die?

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

1. Read the head in 4A. 2. Read the questions in 4A. 3. Get back to the summary. 4. In pairs, answer the questions. 5. Share your answers. 1. Read the questions in B. 2. Get back to the summary. 3. In pairs, answer the questions. 4. Share your answers with the teacher.

Teach (12-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

1. Teach the past continous and past simple. 2. Do the task in C. 3. Ask CCQs to check for understanding.

Test #2 (10-12 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

1. Read the head of the question in 5. 2. Read the text without answering. 3. Read the sentences from a to h. 4. In pairs, get back to the text and complete the missing parts using the sentences from a to h. 5. After you finish, check your answers with another pair of students.

Free practice (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1. Think of a famous person in your country, alive or late. 2. Write down some essential information about that person. 3. Take turns telling that person's story and then ask questions. 4. Share what you learned about your partner's choice with your teacher.
