Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Present perfect and past simple in the context of Life events/situations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using various texts in the context of Life events/situations.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Write down three happy things you did or three happy situations that happened to you this year! 2. Exchange sentences with your partner. 3. Read each other's sentences. 4. Ask questions about the situations!

Test #1 (10-12 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

1. Read the sentences in exercise 4A from the previous handout. 2. Read again and underline examples of the present perfect and the past simple. 3. Read the sentences in the box. 4. Complete the sentences with present perfect or past simple. 5. Look at the sentences in 4A again, then match them with the rules. 6. Share your answers with the teacher.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

1. Read the question in 6A. 2. Read 6A without writing the correct form of verbs. 3. Answer the question in 6A. 4. Complete the text with the correct form of verbs. 5. Share your answers with the teacher. 6. Teach the present perfect and present simple.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

1. Read the phrases in 7A. 2. Listen to the phrases and record the difference. 3. Listen again and write down the sentences. 4. Teach by choral/individual drilling.

Free practice (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1. Read the sentences in the box in 8A. 2. In pairs, divide yourselves into A & B. 3. Student A will write. Have you ever asked questions using the sentences in the box. 4. Student B turn to page 158. 5. Students A & B take turns asking and answering questions. 6. Try to find five things that you have done your partner hasn't done.

Feedback (5-8 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage
