Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about listening activity in the context of men's and women's brain.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about how do men's and women's brain work in the context of men's and women's brain.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. In pairs, think of five differences between men's and women's ways of thinking (think of funny things). 2. Share your thoughts with the class.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In pairs, think of the following: 1. Read the text. 2. Do you think male and female brains are different? 3. What are the stereotypes of men and women in your country?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1. Take a piece of paper (prepared). 2. Listen to parts 1 and 2 and follow the bike test instructions. 3. Listen again, then compare answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1. listen to the explanation in part 3. 2. Turn to page 158 and check your picture. 3. In pairs, how many parts did your bike have? 4. Compare your picture with a partner; could it work? Does it have a person on it?

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1. In pairs, was the explanation correct for you? 2. Do you agree with the presenter's views about men and women? 3. Share your thoughts with the teacher?
