Description

This is a grammar lesson whose intention is to provide Ss with opportunities to learn and practice 'be used to' and 'get used to' through reading and speaking.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of "be used to" and "get used to" in the context of living in a foreign country.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about Mongolia in the context of living in a foreign country.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of living in a foreign country.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a coversation in the context of things you are used to or not used to

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask my Ss to think about their feelings and experience with or thoughts regarding living in a foreign country. 1st Jamboard slide: Have you or would you like to live in another country?

Exposure (5-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask my students to read the article for the main idea. 2nd Jamboard slide 3 min to read individually

Highlighting (5-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will introduce the target language. I will ask the students to read the text again paying attention to the target language. 2nd Jamboard slide for reading. DEMO FIRST PHRASE 4 min to read and write down example sentences Reveal target language in article after 2nd reading. 6 SENTENCES 3rd Jamboard slide reveals target language in bold.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MEANING 4th Jamboard slide FUNCTIONS LIKE A MODAL VERB (WOULD) 1. be used to — Be used to means 'be familiar with' or 'be accustomed to'. [Normal] 2. get used to — Get used to is the process of becoming familiar with something. [Not normal] CCQs: 1. When I say, I am used to sleeping during the day because I work at night, is sleeping during the day normal or not normal for me? 2. When I say, I am GETTING used to sleeping during the day because I work at night, is sleeping during the day normal or not normal for me? 5th Jamboard slide I will show my Ss the past, present and future forms. I will ask my Ss some CCQs for Ss to clarify meaning, sentences taken from our text. 1. I'm used to staying in the tents. Is staying in the tents normal or not normal for this person? -Normal 2. I wasn't used to the lumps of fat my friends ate. Were lumps of fat normal or not normal for this person? -Not normal 3. I'm slowly getting used to the food. Is the food already normal or still not normal for this person? -Not normal but becoming more normal. 4. I'll never get used to being outside in the cold! Does this person think it is possible or impossible to find the cold normal? -Impossible FORM Point out to students that be and get used to are followed nouns or by verb in the -ing form or by pronouns. Highlight this aspect of each sentence. CCQs: I will ask my Ss some CCQs for Ss to clarify form. 1. I'm used to staying in the tents. What tense is this sentence, present, past or future? -Present 2. I wasn't used to the lumps of fat my friends ate. What tense is this sentence, present, past or future? -Past 3. I'm slowly getting used to it. What tense is this sentence, present, past or future? -Present 4. I'll never get used to being outside in those temperatures! What tense is this sentence, present, past or future? -Future PRONUNCIATION /ˈjus·tu, -tə/ Drill the pronunciation of used to, students repeat I will read the sentences out loud and will ask Ss to identify which word(s) I am stressing. Reveal stress marks after they've identified stressed words. Drill the 4 sentences emphasizing intonation, students repeat

Controlled Practice (10-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

6th Jamboard slide I will ask my Ss to complete sentences using the correct form of be/get used to. I will ask my Ss to fill in the blanks individually, 4 minutes I WILL DEMO 1ST QUESTION I WILL ASK Ss TO TAKE A SCREEN SHOT OF THE EXERCISE I will ask Ss to compare answers in break-out rooms, 4 minutes. Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask the Ss to answer questions about themselves. Read the questions for 2 minutes and let me know if you have any questions. Questions on 8th Jamboard slide. I WILL ASK Ss TO TAKE A SCREEN SHOT OF THE QUESTIONS I will then ask Ss to take 5-7 minutes to discuss they're responses in pairs. I will monitor Ss for errors DEC
