Description

In this lesson students will learn about 5 different ways to apologize and the correct context to use them in.

Main Aims

  • To provide speaking practice for apologies in the context of an conversation

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency in the context of a conversation with a work friend

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will be shown 3 images and asked what may be the story. The answer is that someone is late for work or didn't show up.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will read through the conversation and write down the apology phrases they find. this will take place on google slides. I will show an example so that they understand to write the full phrase. They will receive 4 minutes to complete the task. Then they will discuss the story and the phrases in breakout rooms for 3 minutes. Then I will go over the phrases with the class.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

We will work as a class to figure where to put the phrases along a line for intensity.formality based on the conversation before, This will help understand the meaning.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

They will fill in the blank on a google form. Using what they learned about the formality of certain phrases they will decide what apology fits in each blank. I will provide the first answer and show how I figured it out then they will be encouraged to work on the form. They will receive 5 minutes and then we will go over answers as a full class.

Free Practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will be directed to do a role play like the conversation previously introduced. One student will be the boss who is frustrated about the other being late while the other must apologize then explain the big reason they were late. after about 5 minutes of this I will have them switch. They will be reminded to try and make it equal and share the talking time. I will listen in and take notes on things I heard. Then OC DF on things I heard
