Main Aims

To help students discuss future plans by providing particular grammatical context and practice for language used when discussing new year's resolutions.
Subsidiary Aims

To help students practice speaking and forming questions in the context of future plans.
Procedure (35-45 minutes)
- 5 mins - Setting context: Discussion around New Year's activities - parties, fireworks, resolutions - Students to be directed towards the activity of setting resolutions/goals (eg losing weight; quitting smoking etc)
- 10 mins - As a group and in turns, students to complete the matching activity (ex.2a, p.88 of the coursebook Face 2 Face Elementary) - Go through answers on following slide, ensure all understand - Students to be presented with an audio file (CD3-27), followed by a fill-the-gap exercise containing the TL (I'm going to...; we're going to...). - Listen to the audio one time, and then again prior to commencing the task (noting the first completed example when it is mentioned in the audio) - Students to complete the task individually (via Google Forms) then go to BOR and discuss answers with partner(s). Brief group discussion afterwards.
- 10 mins - Once students have correctly identified the TL, go over MFP as they relate to decisions about future actions. 1) Resolution (ie Do you have any New Year's resolutions?) 2) I'm going to.../I'm not going to... 3) I will... 4) I'll try to... - Refer to TP8 TLAS for further explanations on the above
- 10 mins - CP activity (ex 7a of p.89 of the coursebook) - Students to correctly conjugate the phrase 'be going to' for each sentence along with the attached verb, with the answer dependent on the subject (I, you, s/he etc). Go through the first question together. - Performed as a group, going in turns
- 10 mins - FP task - students will be asked to pretend it is New Year's day and come up with several (minimum 4) resolutions for the new year. Specifically: Pretend you are at a party on 1 January, 2023 Individually, write up a list of resolutions you have made for the year (minimum of 4) Ask your partner what their resolutions for 2023 are. Once complete, your partner will ask you what your resolutions are - DEC
