Grant Grant

Listening TP-2
Pre-Intermediate level

Description

The students will listen and focus on sub-skills (gist and detail) in the context of leisure activities.

Materials

Main Aims

  • • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a recording about leisure activities with a European context

Subsidiary Aims

  • Build confidence in student listening abilities
  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

We will start by looking at images of leisure activities and answering questions about them in Ss-Ss groups.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students will be sent a link to a vocabulary matching activity. They will fill it out and submit. We will go over it as a class then move onto the next slide where they will be led to pronounce leisure in both American and British English. Then they will be asked individually to read the sentences with the "get enough" phrase embedded.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

They will be given a link to a form that will have 3 different possible summaries. Then I will play the audio with the instruction to listen to the gist and not worry about words they don't know and details. Then I will direct them to submit the form and check their answer with a partner that I assign. Finally I will look at the responses and confirm the correct answer.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will show a demo of the detail activity emphasizing the focus on detail. Then I will direct each the Ss to find a slide and put their name on it. Once everyone has shown that they have a slide I will play the audio for them. After they complete the audio I will put them in breakout rooms for them to discuss their answers. Then I will go over the answers with everyone by having them read the correct statistics and answers on the presentation.

Post-Reading/Listening (15-16 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will have them read the questions "According to the survey, which activities are the most/least popular? Which results are surprising/different from your country?" then I will put them in the chat and the Ss in breakout rooms to discuss. I will jump between the rooms to listen for any errors the make. I will bring everyone back and provide some compliments and a delayed feedback corrections.
