-
To practice reading for gist in the context of memory
Procedure (43-54 minutes)
Begin the lesson by asking student questions where they can use past continuous when responding. What time is it right now? What time was it 30 minutes ago? What were you doing 2 hours ago? What were you doing yesterday at 8pm? What were you doing in the morning?
I will show students the text. Ask them to read it to get general information (for gist). I have divided the text in three sections so the students can read it out loud. They will have time first to read it individually, and then to read it on their own.
We will do a short interactive activity, where students are asked to connect a phrase to a picture. I will let students know that these are activities that were happening in the past. Then, Students will do a short pre-vocabulary activity where they have to check if they think those phrases are continuing actions or completed actions. And another activity where they have to connect the possible meaning to the phrase. This is done to give the students ideas about the meaning of past continuous.
Vocabulary Section I will focus on the vocabulary section by highlighting the language from the text, focusing particularly on 4 words that use past continuous. I will be including the subject for each sentence. Two of the words we will be working on are short, and the other two include a a phrase so that the students can understand the meaning more clearly. I will explain to students that past continuous is used When describing: 1. Action (I was walking, we were running, we were swimming) 2. Background [weather, surroundings, what was happening around you] (The sun was shining, the breeze was flowing) 3. A continuing thought (I was thinking, I was wondering) 4. An interrupted action (I was watching TV, when)
Students will do a short interactive activity. Where they will compare which past tense of to be is used (was/were). All of the subjects will be shown (I, you, he/she, they, we, it) and students will write down which subject belongs to which tense (was/were).
I will show students the form of past continuous, and I will showing students a table of where the was/were is used according to the subject. Then, I will show students the meaning of 4 phrases. I will give students options from a table underneath and ask them does it mean this or this. I will ask students CCQ's. In the end we will go over pronunciation. I will show them a table that asks them two questions: How many syllable does each phrase have and where is the stress? In the end we will do choral and individual drills.
I will given students a google forms questionnaire that will include a fill in the blank questions exercise. Students will have to fill-in the by conjugating a verb to its past continuous form. We will do the first question together. Then, they will answer the questions on their own. Secondly, I will put them in breakout rooms to compare answers with classmates. Finally we will check answers as a whole class.
I will give students a word worksheet. With a list of questions and the target language they have to use. 1. In BORs and with a partner, student will ask each other questions regarding what they did at specific times during the day. They will have to use past continuous to answer. The questions are as follows Questions 1. What were you doing yesterday at 7 am?. 2. What were you doing at 10 am? 3. What were you doing at noon (12 in the afternoon) 4. What were you doing at 3 pm? 5. What were you doing at 6 pm 6. What were you doing at 10 pm 2. Then the students partner will repeat what their partner said in second person singular. You were..... 3. Finally students will compare and see if they were doing the same things.
I will give students feedback based on what they said. I will give them positive feedback on what they did well, and highlight the things they could improve on.
