In this lesson, students learn about the frequency adverbs through guided discovery based on a reading text about a dangerous job.

Main Aims

  • To review and give practice the adverbs of frequency in the context of dangerous jobs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of a dangerous job.
  • To provide reading practice for gist and specific information in the context of dangerous jobs.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will greet the Ss. I will show Ss some pictures related to some jobs and ask: 1. Which job is the most interesting? 2. Which job is the best paid? I will model an answer for them. I will nominate one or two Ss to give opinions.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask Ss to read a story shown on a slide (for one minute) and think about the best title. Then, I will send Ss a GoogleForms to choose the best title for 1 minute. I will show their answers on my screen. Then, I will conduct OCFB. I will show Ss a GoogleForms document and ask Ss to read the text again and choose true or false for 2 minutes. Then, I will show their answers on my screen and asking them how to correct the wrong information.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will show Ss the text on the slide and ask them to complete the sentences with the frequency adverbs according to the text. I will conduct OCFB.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will use a cline for the adverbs of frequency: NEVER OCCASIONALLY SOMETIMES OFTEN USUALLY ALWAYS

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will Ss to find and correct the mistakes on Jamboard. (Individually) I will ask Ss to work in pairs via BORs while I monitor. I will ask Ss to listen to the audio and check their answers. Then, I will show Ss the key answer and provide OCFB. I will ask Ss to listen to the audio again and underline the stressed words on their own Jamboard slides from the previous task. Then, I will conduct OCFB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask Ss to work in pairs and choose a job from the examples given on the slide. Ss will be asked to use the target language. I will model an example. I will monitor and take notes of their mistakes. Then, I will ask them to present their reactions. Finally, I will conduct OCFB and DEC.
