Procedure (35-45 minutes)
Elicit from Ss where and if they are planning to leave their home town / city for a vacation this year. Board some of the vocabulary relevant to this lesson: (v) book a vacation / holiday, all-inclusive, self-catering. Keep this brief and move on to vocabulary clarification.
Meaning Show G-Slide, nominate Ss to match meanings to definitions. As they do, ask CCQs from TLAS and follow up Qs to probe understanding. 1. Self-catering accommodation; C having cooking facilities available so that you can cook meals for yourself 2. Five hundred pounds (500 GBP); D About 12,000 Mexican pesos 3. Fairly quiet place; C more than average peaceful location 4. Last-minute holiday; A the latest possible opportunity for having a vacation. Form Draw Ss' attention to Self-catering accommodation. Nominate a S: ask: what colour is the noun? (Yellow). Ask: what form is self-catering? Is it an adjective or a noun? (adjective). Four on Fairly quiet place. What colour is the noun? (Yellow). What form is fairly? (adverb) Does it modify the noun or the adjective? (adjective). Answers: Self-catering accommodation (adjective + noun); fairly quiet place (adverb + adjective + noun); last-minute holiday (adjective + noun + noun) Pronunciation Tell Ss they will hear the four expressions. As they listen they should put the phrases in the columns according to the stress patterns. Show Ss that each has their own slide. Get them to signal with a thumbs up when they find the slide with their name on it. Play audio twice. Tell Ss the couple in the photo are Andy and Fiona King. They are planning to have a holiday. Elicit where they are: a travel agency. Ask Ss to choose / predict what type of holiday they are planning. Use polling tool on Zoom or get Ss to put their answers in chat. Play audio once and confirm answers: 1. a (last minute holiday); 2. a (don't know where to go); 3. b (haven't talked about how much they will spend.
Show Ss the Fiona and Andy King slide. Highlight the missing words in the sentences. Tell Ss they will listen a second time and complete those gaps. Ask Ss to find their named slides and give you the thumbs up when they have done so. Play audio again and let them complete their slides. Put Ss in BORs to compare answers. Show answers on penultimate slide. Answers: * planning to travel last minute and only for a quick break * would like to go to Spain or Greece, or perhaps a bit more exotic and exciting (like Thailand). * looking for a beach holiday, not too quiet and it's only for two people * can spend around 500 pounds per person. * want self-catering (not only accommodation)
1. Share PDF in chat and show Ss that they should find three holiday which are suitable for the Kinds. Remind Ss that they should they think about length of stay (quick break), country (Spain, Greece, Thailand or someplace exotic), a beach holiday with some nightlife, price (about 500 GBP per person), type of accommodation (self-catering). Give 5 mins to let Ss discuss in pairs. Elicit some suggestions in OC. 2. Put Ss in A/B groups. As are the travel agent and should read and try to make questions from the prompts. Bs are the holiday makers and should think up some details (length of holiday, place to visit, type of accommodation, price. Put Ss in A/B pairs to role play.
