To provide scan reading practice using a text about admitting patients to a hospital in the context of nursing
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
Teacher greets student and asks students if they have attended a native speaker as a nurse. Teacher then proceeds to show the image of a nurse talking to an elderly woman and asks students to describe the image
Teacher asks students to analyze the image again and proceeds to asks the following questions: What do you think the nurse is doing? What information might you need to collect in this situation? Why might this information be important? What strategies have you found useful when greeting a patient for the first time?
Teacher gives student reading 1. Teacher and student read the transcription together out loud. Teacher reads the parts of the patient while students reads the parts of the nurse. Teacher shows some sentences from the reading and asks students to put them in the correct order
Teacher gives reading 2 to students, which is a continuation from the transcript in reading 1. Teacher and students proceed to read the transcript the same way as the previous stage Teacher asks the following questions to the students: 1 Why is Mrs Chad in hospital? 2 What happened to her last year? 3 Does she have any allergies? 4 Does she have a relative who can be contacted during an emergency? Teacher asks students to read again the transcript and asks them to do a column matching exercise
Teacher elicits questions from students and asks students whether the conversation from the reading was accurate to a real life situation or not. DEC.
