A demo to show how to develop reading sub-skills (gist and detail, with an optional specific information exercise) in the context of viral videos and travel.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about travel in the context of making viral videos.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of tech words (viral videos, upload/download, get hits) in the context of travel, computers

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Tell Ss they are going to see four pictures (on PPT). Give Ss 1 minute to think what the four pictures have in common. Ask Ss to share ideas in OC or in pairs via chat. Elicit viral video. Model pronunciation (showing teeth on bottom lip). Ask CCQs: are viral videos popular in Mexico? (Yes). Do people share them on the Internet? (Yes) Which sites do they use? (Youtube, TikTok). Can you send them by e-mail? (Yes). Show them picture of Matt Harding. Elicit in OC or have Ss work in pairs in BORS to guess his nationality (Seattle, USA), interests / hobbies (making and playing video games, traveling), personality (outgoing, extrovert, sociable) age (now 41). Explain that Ss are going to read about Matt's viral video.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Meaning Show G-Slide. Explain to Ss they should match the words (highlighted in yellow) 1-4 with the meanings A-E. There is one definition they shouldn't use. Share link in chat and confirm Ss can access it. Check answers: 1 B, 2 D, 3 C (not a verb -- Ss may confuse with E), 4 A Ask CCQs: #1 Do we know who uploaded the video? (No - Form #1 Ask: what's the form? (Passive - how do we make it? was/were + past participle #3 download -- is it a verb or noun? (noun) How do we know? It's modified by a couple of million Pronunciation Show Slide 2. Tell Ss they will hear four sentences. They should put the sentences according to the stress pattern of the words highlighted in yellow. Play once or twice. Check answers: Oo: 1 downloads, 4 talk shows oOo: 1 uploaded, 2 went viral Drill chorally and individually

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Show Jamboard. Tell Ss they should order the sticky notes according to the events as they appear in the reading. Instruction: you should read fast as you have 2 mins. Ignore individual words. Give each Ss a slide and check they have accessed by asking them to give you a thumbs up reaction. Set the timer. When time is up have Ss compare answers in pairs in BORs before OCFB. Answers: 1 C, 2 E, 3 F, 4 A, 5 B, 6 D

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Tell Ss they are going to read the text again and decide whether the eight sentences in the Google Form are True, False or Not Given. Highlight that NG means the information cannot be found in the text. Show the G-Form and do an example before sharing link in chat. Give 6 mins to answer and submit their responses on G-Form. Put Ss in pairs in BORs to discuss their answers. Encourage them to justify the ones they say are false or NG. OC: Show Ss answers on G-Form responses and confirm Answers: 1 NG, 2 T, 3 T, 4 T, 5 T, 6 NG, 7 NG, 8 F

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask Ss to imagine they have become a celebrity because one of their videos went viral on YouTube. Give them 1 minute to think about the following three points using the prompts on the PPT: 1. What is the theme of your viral video? 2. Why did your video go viral? 3. Now that you are a celebrity, how has your life changed? Get them to share their ideas in pairs for 5 mins. Feed in vocabulary if needed. OCFB on some of the best ideas and give delayed error correction (DEC).
