Description

In this lesson Ss will learn about making suggestions and responding to them in the context of choosing a birthday present for a friend. We will brainstorm ideas for birthday presents, identify the TL in a dialogue, then elicit MFPA together with a focus on pronunciation and intonation. After this Ss will complete CP for accuracy and then apply what they have learnt in FP to develop their fluency making suggestions and responding to them.

Main Aims

  • To enable students to develop their reading skills through use of functional language in gist and intensive tasks in the context of making suggestions to get a birthday present

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask the Ss, "What do you want for your birthday?" I will elicit answers from the Ss and use images as prompts which we can use for our FP task (2-3 mins)

Text Work (6-7 minutes) • To provide context for and identify the target language through a text or situation

GIST TASK I will show the Ss the dialogue, give instructions and send to BOR Instructions: - You have 1 min to read the dialogue for Gist. - After 1 min put your answer in the zoom chat box ICQs - How many minutes to read the dialogue? 1 minute - Where do you put your answer? In the chat box INTENSIVE TASK Instructions: Ok, these are phrases from the dialogue. Read the dialogue for 1 min I will put you in BOR. Each BOR has a Jamboard As a team put the words in the correct order. You have 2 mins. After this, we will check answers together (1 min) ICQs Will you be putting the words in the correct order? Yes Will you answer as a team in BOR? Yes

Clarification - MFPA (14-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MEANING I will show Ss the multi-choice activity on Google Forms and give them 3 mins to complete the task in BOR and compare answers with their partners (3 mins) Ss will share answers with class for 1 min (1 min) Instructions: "You have 3 mins to complete the multichoice task and compare answers with your partner in BOR. Then we will share answers with the class." ICQs What type/kind of task is this? Multichoice How long do you have to complete this with your partner? 3 mins FORM (3 mins) I will show Ss my Google Slides and elicit the form of the TL from the Ss and ask them to give me their own example from 2 or 3 of the suggestions "Tell me the form for PRONUNCIATION (7 mins) I will model and drill pronunciation of the TL I will elicit stress and intonation from Ss APPROPRIACY (1 min) I will elicit appropriacy from Ss

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will show the Ss the Fill the Gap activity and send the link to them in the chat box. They will have 3 minutes to complete the task. After this, they will go to BOR and compare answers. Each group will put their answers in the group chat box I will show the answer key and check the answers with the class (1 min) Instructions: "Complete this fill the gap activity. You have 3 mins After this, I will send you to BOR Compare answers with your partner After this, one person sends your answer to the group. ICQs - What kind of activity is this? Fill the Gap - How long do you have? 3 mins - You will write you answers in what? The chat box Actions: - Give Ss instructions for the task - Send to BOR - Share answers as a class

Free Practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask the Ss to discuss the question What shall we get Ariana for her birthday? I will demonstrate an example with a S by asking them to ask me for a suggestion, "What shall we get her? I will then use a suggestion and ask them to give me a response and suggestion. We will use the ideas from the Lead-in activity to use with the TL Ok, class. It is Maria's birthday next week. You have 7 mins to discuss with your partner. Give suggestions about, "What shall we get Maria for her birthday?" Use your ideas from the brainstorm. I will demonstrate with J. J can you start the discussion and ask me for a suggestion using, "What shall we get her?". How about a...puppy?...."

Delayed Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To elicit corrections from Ss to mistakes made during the session

I wil elicit from Ss about what they suggested as presents for Ariana's birthday. I will show them 2 examples of what they did well and what needs correction. I will elicit correction from the Ss I will thank them for joining me for the lesson!
