Procedure (27-40 minutes)
I will show students a picture of Raya and Skeena ( famous characters in Egypt). Ask students who are they? / What are they famous for? Open class discussion.
I will teach students some key words that students may face difficulties when reading the text . Inspector: noun countable/ someone whose job is to officially inspect something. I will show students a picture of inspector and they guess who is he? ( Picture) As there is a picture, no need for CCQs. Murder: noun countable and uncountable/ A crime of killing. I will show them a picture of a man holding a knife and another man is killed. Ask students what did that man( the one who holds the knife) do? ( kill ). What is this situation? ( murder). Murderer: Noun/ countable: someone who murders another person. I will show students the same picture again and point to the man who holds the knife and ask, who is he? ( it is expected that students answer killer) I will say he is a murderer.
I will students the back of the book. This is the back of the book and it is about the book itself. Now you have 1 minute to read it and tell what is this book about? IW ICQs: What are you reading? ( the back of the book) Are you reading with your partner? (NO) After they finish reading, so what is this about? ( A murder) Where did it happen? ( in a country house. When did it happen? ( 1938) Excellent, so now you you will ask your pair about these characters. demo: Who is Amanda? She's Jeremy's wife. ICQs: Are you reading or asking questions? (Asking questions) 1 minute to practice in pairs.
Now, you will answer those questions by reading that passage. The questions are T rue or False, but remember if the sentence is false you must write the correct answer. Demo: The first sentence somebody killed Jeremy at 08.00 (False) where is the correct answer. The fourth line " between midnight and 07.00" The second sentences: The inspector questioned Amanda in the living room. (False) the correct answer is......? 4 minutes to answer, You read alone. So the characters were......? (Amanda / Gordon / Claudia) You will listen the inspector question Barbra. You will fill in the gaps. Individual work. ICQs: Will you just listen or listen and fill in the gaps? (listen and fill in the gaps) Same procedure for Gordon and Claudia. The whole listening is around 5 min Compare answer with your pair. 1 minute. Open class feedback. Ask student, Who do you think is the murderer? why? Now you will listen to what really happened. Students will be divided into As and Bs. I will ask, where are As? Where are Bs? There was a robbery yesterday. As you are the police officers. Bs your are two friends and the police officers think you were responsible. but you said you went out yesterday together. As, You will ask one of the Bs some questions and write the answer in the form. Bs, the police officers will meet you separately, so your story must be the same to be innocent. You have 2 minute to prepare extra questions to know if they lie or not. Bs you have 2 minutes to agree about a story and tell it to the police officers. You two must have the same story because if you lie, you will be the robber.
As I was monitoring, I spotted some students' mistakes. I will write them on the board and correct them.
