Description

In this lesson Ss will develop their speaking using collocations in the context of things to do on holiday.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To develop students' speaking skills through fluency practice in the context of things you do on holidays

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop students' reading skills through gist and detailed tasks in the context of things you do on holiday

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Set a 2 min challenge for Ss to " List 10 things to do on holiday" on Google Slides. Use images to elicit and encourage verbal answers by using their names and giving praise.

Content Preparation (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will show Ss the dialogue on Google Doc Instruction - "You will have 1 min to read this dialogue for Gist. After reading the dialogue we will answer the Gist question together as a class." ICQs - Will you be reading for Gist or detail? Gist - How long do you have to read the dialogue? 1 min - Will we answer the Gist question individually or as a class? As a class "You will have 1 min to read the dialogue again for detail. After this you will 2 mins to match the verbs and nouns together on the Google Form in BOR. After this we will check together as a class. In BOR one person please share your screen" - I will demonstrate how to answer on the Google Form ICQs - Will you be matching verbs and nouns individually or in pairs in BOR? Pairs in BOR - Will you share your screen in BOR? Yes

Language Preparation (6-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

MFP carried out on Google Slides M: As a class Ss will complete a match the meaning task as a class I will model the first answer and then will ask individual Ss to annotate an arrow to the correct answer, and encourage other Ss to assist if the Ss is unsure of the answer (2 mins) CCQs (2 mins) 1. Stay in a hotel Will I sleep here during my holiday? Yes. Will I be inside or outside this place? Inside. Will I pay to be here? Yes 2. Rent a car Are you paying money for the car? Yes. Are you buying or borrowing the car? Borrowing. Are you returning the car? Yes 3. Travel around Are you going somewhere? Yes. Is it a place you want to go? Yes. Am I going to see some famous places? Yes 4. Go sightseeing Will you stay in one place? No Are you going to different places? Yes Will you see different things? Yes 5. Go to the beach Will there be sand? Yes. Will it be close to the sea and water? Yes. Will you get sand in your toes? Yes. Can you swim there? Yes. Form: I will elicit the nouns, verbs, prepositions and adverbs from the Ss (1-2 mins) I will mention that there are many different ways to use go with a preposition, Eg. go to the, go to a, go on, go before P: I will model, drill and elicit pronunciation, word stress, and word linkage with the Ss individuals and as a class (2 mins) Eg. Stress on Stay in Stay in a hotel Word linkage between Stay and in and a A: I will elicit appropriacy, all TL is neutral

Speaking (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will ask Ss to discuss the questions with scaffolding below in pairs in BOR After 5 mins I will move Ss to different BOR to change partners Ss will discuss in BOR three times I will demo with another S how to use the questions for discussion Instruction: "You will discuss this scenario in pairs in BOR. You will change partners every 5 mins. I have provided you with these questions and answers you can ask your partners. Try to use the new TL we learnt today. You can also use your own collocations using, "Verb +/- preposition + noun". For example, " ICQs How long will you be with your partner in BOR? 5 mins Will you have the same partner the whole time? No How long will you be in BOR? 15 mins ------------ Think about your dream holiday. Where would you go? And why? Eg. I would go to… (name of place) because… How would you get there? And why? Eg. I would travel by… (type of transport) because… What would you do? And why? Eg. I would go on/to… (place or activity) because… Where would you stay? And why? Eg. I would stay in a… (place) because… Try to use: New Target Language Go on a boat trip Stay in a hotel Rent a car Go sightseeing Go to the beach Travel around OR Your own collocations Verb + noun Verb + preposition + noun

Content and Language Feedback (5-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

First I will elicit and give feedback on the content (things to do on holiday) and then the language, based on what I noticed during the speaking task in BOR
