To introduce the use of modals of obligation (past time) in the context of past
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice using introduced modals (past)
Procedure (47-60 minutes)
-T will ask what the reading text was about and how the woman in the text started her career -T then will ask students to discuss how they began their career and how they made their decisions -Ss will work in pairs WCF
-Ss will get into two groups -T will give two groups of strips of papers (one group with modal sentences, the other group with concept sentences ) to each group to match -Ss will work in groups -Answer key
-T will ask Ss to scan the text (Camden Market-Ss will have already been given the text in the previous lesson) to find sentences with modals of obligation -T will write them on the board to provide more examples about the TL -T will highlight target language through model sentences (given in the previous stage) focusing on meaning, form and pronunciation -T drills-choral-indv. repetition
-T will give complete the text HOs -Ss will work individually to fill in the gaps with "had to, didn't have to, could and couldn't" -Ss will check in pairs -Ss will write down the answers on the board
-T will give three uncompleted sentences and ask students to complete them in different ways -Ss will work in pairs, (even mingle) ask and answer the questions (delayed error correction as necessary)
-T will give Ss an imaginary situation (imagine before this life, you used to live in a perfect world and in this perfect world you could/didn't have to...etc.) -T will ask Ss to think about such a world and tell each other what they were allowed to do, was possible etc. using TL -Ss will work in pairs (Delayed error correction as necessary)
-T will give "Find out how many people..." HOs (similar to find someone who activity) -Ss will mingle and ask questions to their friends (delayed error correction as necessary)
