Advanced level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification of the whole MFP of the simple and past forms to talk about present and past habits in the context of two people talking about their healthy and unhealthy habits.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide students with gist listening practice using an audio of two people talking about their habits.
-
To provide students with speaking practice in a short discussion about certain habits.
Procedure (34-46 minutes)
Students will be shown some images of people eating and working out. Then, they will be asked what those images represent, eventually eliciting "routines". Follow-up questions will be asked if necessary.
Students will be played an audio in order to get some context. As they listen, they will have to answer one question and say which person from the audio is healthier and why. They might be sent to BORs to exchange their answers.
Students will be shown some sentences from the audio and will be asked to analyze them together. Some questions will be put over there for them to take them into consideration while analyzing the sentences. The analysis will be carried out through an exercise in which they will have to complete the sentences with the correct verb. This stage will be mainly carried out in BORs for some minutes, then the whole MFP will be elicited from the students in the main room (the tenses in question are present simple and past simple, the students are advanced so the analysis is expected to flow easily).
Students will be presented with a text that they will have to complete with the correct form of the verbs in parenthesis. They will be given some time to do it in BORs in pairs or groups and then they will be summoned back to the main room so that we can verify the answers as a class. The text is about someone's parents, Bernie and Ellen, who are somehow describing some of their everyday habits and routines.
Students will be asked to go to different rooms again to discuss a speaking activity. They will have to compare their past habits to their current ones. They will be given some aspects that can be taken into consideration in order to encourage them to talk more.
The teacher will carry out D.E.C taking into consideration some mistakes that might have been made in the speaking activity.
