Procedure (43-54 minutes)
Ss look at the title of the article and in pairs, try to guess what they will read about. T elicits some suggestions and writes them on board.
In exercise 1, Ss read the title of the article again and discuss in small groups of 3 or 4 the question 'Why do you think teens aren't allowed in the mall?'. T monitors. One student from each group shares ideas as an open class activity. T writes these ideas on board.
In exercise 1, Ss read the article quickly to check if their suggestions were correct. T tells Ss to try to guess the meaning of new vocabulary while reading. T elicits the correct answer to the question as an open class activity.
Ss read the article again to decide if the sentences given in exercise 2 are true or false. This time more time is given. They peer check before sharing answers with T as an open class activity.
Students read the meanings 1 - 5 and match them to the highlighted words and phrases in the article. T does the first item as an example. Ss work individually and then compare answers in pairs before checking them as an open class activity.
In exercise 4, Ss change pairs and match the Qs to the teens in the article. They compare answers with the closest pairs before giving answers to T as an open class activity.
Ss work in small groups of 3 or 4 and discuss the questions in Talking Points. 'Do you think it is sometimes necessary for malls to not allow unaccompanied teenagers?' 'Do you think people spend too much time shopping? Why? Why not?' T monitors closely and collects data for feedback.
While Ss are doing the final free practice activity, T collects data on students' language use and then gives language feedback on board in terms of good language and reformulation.
