Description
Main Aims
-
To introduce and practice relative clauses in the context of celebrations.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency speaking practice in a description of a famous celebration from their country.
Procedure (33-45 minutes)
I will greet the Ss. I will show Ss some pictures related to famous celebrations (Mother's Day, Father's Day, Rio Carnival and New Year's Eve) and ask them the following questions: 1. Have you heard of these celebrations? 2. Do you have a favourite celebration? I will model an answer for them. I will nominate one or two Ss to give opinions.
I will ask Ss to read a story shown on a slide (for one minute) and think about the best title. Then, I will send Ss a GoogleForms to choose the best title for 1 minute. I will show their answers on my screen. Then, I will conduct OCFB.
I will show Ss the text on the slide and ask them to highlight the sentences with relative pronouns (who, what, which, whom, whose, that, where or when).
MEANING: T writes a sentence marker and uses CCQs to check the meaning. Children's Day on May 5th, which used to be known as 'Boys' Day', is the day when Japanese families wish their children happiness, good health and success. CCQs: *Is there meaning if we remove the relative clause? *Does the relative clause give us more information about the main clause? *What punctuation separates the main clause from the relative clause? FORM: 1. I will elicit the Form from the Ss: Main clause + Relative clause + Main clause PRONUNCIATION: 1. I will say the sentence aloud and ask Ss where is the stress.
