Description

This lesson will provide reading practice for specific information and detail in the context of success and failure. The lesson will begin by asking the students to discuss the topics of men/women in sport, as well as risk. The lesson will then cover MFP of several complex words/terms, followed by a quick reading of the text, questions about the text and feedback. The lesson will then progress to a more thorough reading of the text by the students, followed by questions about the text and then discussion/feedback about the text and students' responses.

Main Aims

  • To enable students to develope their reading skills in the context of success and failure, with reference to an article on sports generally and women's sports in particular.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students the opportunity to think abd speak about more situations and contexts involving success and failure, and risk generally.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- 5 mins - Introduce / re-introduce self to students - Introduce the reading topic - success and failure - very brief overview of MFP for both - Ask students to explain what success and failure means to them - Brief question about success and failure in the context of sport T-S T-Ss

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- 12 mins - Four words will be chosen from the text - the MFP of the words will be discussed with the students, asking them what they think is the meaning, as well as examples in which the words may be used: - Gamble - Overcame - Scouts - Recruit (T-S; T-Ss)

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- About 16 mins - Quick read of the text to get the gist of it, followed by general questions on the text, and then feedback - Detailed reading of the text in small groups, answering a survey/Google Form about the text (multiple choice) - Students check answers in pairs (T-S; T-Ss; S-S)

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- 10 mins - Get students to talk about the reading text, offer their opinions - Conduct feedback on the task T-S T-Ss
