Pre-Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To give students practice in reading for specific information in the context of an article about great love affairs.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To give students freer speaking practice.
Procedure (35-47 minutes)
Draw a big heart on the board and in it hang the printed photos of Turkish celebrities who are known to have love affairs. Point out that people having love affairs have very strong feelings for each other, and they are ready to make big changes or sacrifices in their lives for the person they love.
Set-up 2-3 groups. Write the new vocabulary that the students will come across, while reading the article, on the board, and hand them the printed out vocabulary work sheet that has pictures which associate with the vocabulary on the board. Tell the students to match the pictures with the new vocabulary as a group, walk around the class monitor and help them.
Set-up pairs and give the handouts to the students. Tell them not to read the articles yet but to try to find the answers to the questions by looking at the photos of the famous lovers. While they are doing that, monitor the students, make sure they understand the questions and help them where they are stuck.
Tell students to read the articles and check their answers that they gave to the questions by looking at the photos. Give them time to read and understand the articles, while they are doing so, monitor the students and answer them if they have any questions. Help them understand the articles if they have problems with them.
Give one question format handout to one student of the pair and the other one to the other student. Tell them to write down questions about the paragraphs using the formats they are given. Give them time to write down their questions, while they are doing that walk around and help the students. Once the students are finished doing that, tell them to switch the questions that they wrote, with their partner and to answer the questions that their partner wrote down.
Set-up groups of 4-5, and let the students discuss the given questions on the handouts as a group. Monitor the students and help them if they don't understand.
