Description

In this lesson, Ss will develop their skills in reading for the gist and specific information. They will learn some vocabulary of travel and the difference in meaning. Ss will be able to talk about the best places in Turkey.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about TV programme in the context of 50 places to go

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of trip, tour, travel, journey and destination in the context of Travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows a picture (plane) to the Ss and asks them "What can you see?" T tells the students that in September he is going to_______ (travel). In pairs, Ss think where is the T going?. T elicits the answers and discusses with the students the places (where to go and what to see)

Pre-Reading (4 minutes) • pre-teach vocabulary of travel

T draws a map of Turkey. T locates two places on the map (Gaziantep and Istanbul). T draws a line from Istanbul to Gaziantep telling the Ss that this is his "destination". T elicits the verb "travel". In Gaziantep, T will have a "tour" to have a look around the city (castle, museum etc). T tells the Ss that after a week he will have a journey from Gzi to bodrum. it is a long distance, so we call it "journey".In the next month T will go from Gzi to Nizip (T locates the town on the map), a short distance so we call it a trip.

Matching (3 minutes) • To check the Ss' understanding

In pairs,T gives the Ss pieces of papers to match the words with the definitions. Then, T elicits the answers and hands the Ss a handout (see the materials) for the answers.

While-reading 1 (1 minutes) • To develop the Ss' skills in reading for the gist

T asks Ss to fold the paper and not to look at the answers. Then, T asks Ss to read the TV programme and tell the T "what is it about?"

While-reading 2 (4 minutes) • To develop Ss' skills in reading for specific information.

In groups, T tells the Ss that they are going to read a bout a TV program and then they are going to answer the questions. T gives the Ss the HOs.

Peer check (2 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to work in groups and share their answers

In groups, Ss will share their answers. Then, T elicits the answers on the WB.

Practice 1 (10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to work in groups and share their ideas

T shows 3 pictures of the great wall of China, the pyramid of Egypt and the South Island, New Zealand. In groups, Ss will choose one place to go and why. Then, they will mingle and tell each other their answers. T elicits the answers.

Post-reading (10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In groups,T gives the Ss a chart asking them to write top five/three holiday destinations in Turkey with one reason for each.

Freer Practice (4 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to Ss moving to another group and share their ideas

T nominates one S to stay in the same group and asks the others to move to another group to have a look at the places and discuss the reasons. when they finish, they move to another group and so on.

Feedback and Error Correction (2 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T highlights some mistakes and errors and correct them
