Description

In these two lessons Ss will be listening to two friends having a conversation about storytelling. Then they'll be learning the vocxbulary used in the listening and lastly they'll be writing a short story.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about storytelling

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a story in the context of creative writing

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

We have a coversation about stıories. Teacher asks "What type of stories do you enjoy the most and why?" and "Do you like telling stories, listening to stories or watching stories?"

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

We look at the pictures and discuss what the listening might be about. Teacher tells or doesn't tell the students what the listening is going to be about depending on the answers given by students.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss listen for gist and put the pictures in the correct order they are mentioned in the listening.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Befoe the second listening teacher draws Ss attention to the Reporting Verbs section and gives a short explanation. Then Ss listen again and answer the Reporting Verbs questions in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (45-50 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

We discuss what makes a good story. As a post-reading and writing exercise, Ss write stories in groups of three. We use the Story Dice website for this section. Teacher encourages Ss to use reporting verbs such reminded, explained, whispered, agreed, warned etc.
