Description

In this lesson, the students will be walked through a reading text in the context of "television theories" to develop their receptive reading skills. The lesson starts with a small discussion and then is followed by a kind of jig-saw reading activity. The lesson will end with a freer writing and speaking practice in the same context.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, the students will have practiced with their receptive sub-skills in reading for gist and reading for specific information in the context of "views on television"

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, the students will have practiced with their productive skills in writing and speaking

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson and preteach some vocabulary

-- The teacher starts talking about watching television and elicits some effects that watching TV could have. -- The teacher preteaches some key vocabulary from the reading text.

Reading for gist (4-5 minutes) • To help students develop their sub-skills in reading for gist

-- The teacher puts the students in groups of three or four. -- The teacher puts the different paragraphs of a reading passage on the wall around the classroom -- The teacher gives the headings of all the paragraphs to the groups and has them walk around the classroom and match the right heading with the corresponding paragraph. The students will need to do this activity in a short time so as to improve their speed in skimming.

Reading for specific information (5-7 minutes) • To help students develop their sub-skills in reading for specific information

-- The teacher gives each group five short texts and asks them to walk around the classroom and match them with the relevant paragraph. The teacher explains that one of the texts will go unused.

Reading for detail (6-8 minutes) • To help students to get more details from the text and share them with each other verbally

-- The teacher puts the students in groups of four or three and gives each group a paragraph of the reading text and asks them to read it carefully. -- The teacher makes new groups with individuals from different groups and has them tell their group members about what they have read.

freer writing practice in the context of "views on television" (7-9 minutes) • To give students a chance to express their views about watching television in a written form

-- The teacher has the students write about what they think is good or bad about watching television.

freer speaking practice in the context of "watching television" ( if time ) (6-7 minutes) • To give students extra speaking chance to develop their fluency sub-skill

-- The teacher puts the whole class in two rows in front of each other to talk about Turkish programs.
