LP- 24.05- Second and third lesson
pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about second conditionals through guided discovery based on an audio. The lesson starts with a whole class discussion about moral dilammas to create a connection between students' lives and the context with the help of the given pictures. This is followed by an audio in which students are exposed to the target language. Later, there is some controlled practice through handout. Finally, for free practice, students in groups are given some items as pictures and discuss about how they would survive in an dessert island.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of second conditionals in the context of moral dilemmas

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice of second conditionals in the context of dessert island

Procedure

Warmer/ lead in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher refers to the pictures and asks students to work in pairs and discuss what the activities are and which one of these situation is the worst and why. After that they share their ideas with whole class.

Exposure (10-15 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T asks students to listen to the audio twice. Listening for the first time is for comprehension and ss are asked to answer 5 comprehension check questions. After answering the questions, pair check will be done. Then, answers will be provided by T. T asks ss to listen for the second time to provide context for the target language and answer the following questions: 1- What was the question they asked the people of Camden? 2- what did people answer this question mostly? When the sts find the answer individually, they compare their answers with their pairs and after that the T receives whole class feedback

Highlighting (7-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students are asked to go through the questions in 3a and try to choose the correct answers and then check from the audio (in pairs). After that the T shows the AK.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher asks some CCQ's (3b) to clarify the meaning and form of the target structure. They analyse positive / negative and question forms by eliciting them from the sts. As an example: 1- Does this question refer to a real or imaginary situation? 2- Is this sentence condition or the result? The teacher then highlights pronunciation using (3c and 3d) and receives whole class feedback.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss are given handout which focuses on dessert island context. Ss are asked to fill in the blanks in the handout for the first exercise and check their answers with their partners.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

In the second exercise on the handout, ss are given different contexts and asked to discuss in pairs what they would do in each context.

Free Practice (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss in groups are given a dessert island scenario with 3 items and asked to discuss how they would use those items and survive for a month. At the end, groups report their discussion and the best solution will be chosen by the class.
