Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Read the following situations. 2. In pairs, decide whether the people in each situation are happy, unhappy, or neutral. 3. Share your ideas with the class.

Highlighting (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1. Elicit the formula of the third conditional. 2. Explain the formula. 3. Explain the usage of the third conditional.

Controlled Practice (10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1. Read the situations again. 2. Work with a partner, and write down some sentences that show regret. 3. Read your sentences. 4. Explain why do you have regrets.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

1. Read the following sentences. 2. In pairs, put the sentences in order. 3. Write two sentences for each situation using If only or I wish. 4. Share your answers with the class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1. In pairs, describe your childhood to your partner in a few sentences (I'll provide examples). 2. With a partner, speculate about your childhood (I'll provide examples). 3. Share your ideas with the class.

Homework • To provide extra practice on the target language.

1. Think about some recent events you heard about in the news. 2. Think about how things might have been different if something else has happened.
