Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of hypothetical possibilities with if

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of imaginary s

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks: If you could do anything illegal without suffering the consequences, what would you do? I would probably get into a concert venue without a ticket. What about you? (Open Class)

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shows Google Forms. Tells students to tick (☑) the two questions the people answered. X Would you buy a public transport ticket? ☑ Would you travel by train without a ticket? X Would you feel bad about breaking the law? ☑ Would you drive above the speed limit? T asks students to submit answers, conducts OCFB with response tab and video transcription

Highlighting (4-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T shows other GForms, tells students to complete the transcription with the missing words. T conducts OCFB with response tab and complete transcription.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning T shows Jamboard with marker sentences Did the woman get on a train without a ticket? (no) Did the inspector come? (no) Did a child step in front of his car? (no) So, are these imaginary or real situations? (imaginary) Form T shows next slide, asks ss to complete the sentence ___ I had the money, I _______ buy a new car. I ________ go for a walk if I wasn't _________ (feel) so tired T asks students to match the formula to the clause it belongs to (OCFB) I would go with you If I wasn't feeling so tired and If I didn't have homework. S + would/wouldn't + verb If + S + Past Continuous If + S + Past Simple CCQ: Are these sentences also referring to an imaginary situation? (yes) If you didn't talk so much, people might listen to you more. I could help you if I had more time. So, can we use might or could instead of would? (yes) Pronunciation T highlights the contracted form "I'd", tells students to listen to the audio once. T tells students "I will play it again but pause after each sentence and you will repeat." T requests students to repeat by saying "Everyone" and raising hands as if directing them. T then says "Now, I will select someone to repeat each sentence" I'd move to a big house by the sea. I'd go to live in California. I'd buy some new trainers. I'd give up work. I'd be a famous rock star.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T sends students wordwall link. Students complete fill in the blanks activity. T sends second wordwall link. Students complete unscramble the sentences activity. T conducts OCFB

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Activity: Spin the wheel and ask a question to your classmate. There is one slot that says "ask your own question", this means that you can come up with your own hypothetical question. T demonstrates how to use the wheel. Have fun! T sends link, sends students to BORs
