Vacations ~
Upper - intermediate level
Description
Main Aims
-
To introduce and practice future continuous in the context of vacations and possible future plans
Subsidiary Aims
-
Reading for specific information
Procedure (33-45 minutes)
Set the context for the topic by telling students vacations are just around the corner, and ask them some questions such as "Are you excited for vacations? "Got any idea on what you will be doing in the upcoming weeks? Tell them to share a brief idea Model an example first before going over students' responses.
For the gist task. Tell students they are going to listen to an audio about two friends talking about what they will be doing in the upcoming weeks for their vacations. Tell students they will need to listen to it to get a general idea and have a slide prepared with some sentences that they will need to mark as T (true) or F (false) Sentences: 1 Is Elena excited to visit New York? (T) 2 Will she be staying for over two weeks? (F) 3 Will she be touring the statue of liberty? (T) 4 Will she be travelling with Lucy? (F) 5 Is Elena thinking about getting married? (F) As for the intensive task. Have a slide with the audio script for the previous conversation and tell students they will go over it and they need to identify expressions that refer to the future. Nominate some students and have the answers ready to show them Answers: I will be there for over a week I will be babysitting my cousin’s children What will you be doing in NY? I will be seeing all of the sights of course I will be touring everything Will you be taking anyone with you?
To cover meaning: Have a slide with different sentences and ask students if any of the words are unfamiliar to them (clarify if they have doubts). After that, tell students they will need to classify the sentences into their corresponding boxes with their meaning. To cover appropriacy: Have a mini chart where students classify if the sentences are Formal, Informal, or Neutral To cover form: Tell students the grammatical structure they are seeing is called "Future continuous" have a timeline with two sentences and a brief explanation. Then proceed to elicit the structure of the sentence by asking students to tell you its components. After they answer show them the structure of the positive sentences "Subject + will ('ll) be + verb in ing + complement" And for negative sentences, the structure will be "Subject + will not (won't) be + verb in ing + complement" Show students again another sentence and elicit how the questions for the future continuous are made which will be "(question word) + will + subject + be + verb in ing" To cover pronunciation: Have three sentences with the correct stress marked on them. Ask students to drill as a group once and nominate a few students to check on individual pronunciation The sentences are: - I will be staying there for over a week (there is a linkage for over a week) - Will you be taking anyone with you? (there is a linkage between with you) (the intonation rises at the end) - I bet you will be falling in love in no time!
Tell students that for the next activity. They will need to choose the correct option for the sentence. They will be completing their task individually, send them a word document, and ask them if they can download and write on it or write the answer in their notebooks. Go over the first sentence as a whole group. After that let them work individually and send them to BORs to check their answers with someone. Go back to the main session and have a slide with the answers on it. Ask if they have any questions for the answers
Tell students for this last activity, they will be send to BORs and they will need to ask their partners what they will be doing or (won’t be doing) on vacations, they will listen to their classmates and share their thoughts too. You will change their partners once. Have a slide with the questions and key information about the future continuous and the structure of its form so that students remember and make use of it when they talk with their partners. Tell them they can take a screenshot Go back to the main lesson and ask them what one of their partners said they will be doing on vacations. Write some sentences on the screen to go over DEC (remember to praise students efforts).
