Copy of The Zero and First Conditionals
Intermediate, B2 level

Description

In this lesson, the students will learn about the use of the zero and first conditionals through guided discovery based on reading the interview about anger management. The lesson starts with a short lead-in about anger management, after the students read the interview and do true/false task. The teacher elicits the examples of the zero and first conditionals and asks students some questions about the use and meaning. This is followed by exercises about two conditionals and finally the students wilk develop spoken examples of their own using the grammar taught.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the zero and first conditionals

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop students' ability to read a text for gist. To provide the students practice their speaking using the zero and first conditionals.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and make the context of the lesson interesting for SS

The T greets students. Have projector ready to show a video clip about anger management. The T plays the video clip and asks the questions: What is the video clip about? Where are two men? How does tge man on the right feel? Who is the man sitting next to him? The T elicits the answers from students.

Pre-grammar reading (5-7 minutes) • Reading for details

The T gives out the hand outs. The T gives the instructions. "Read the interview about anger therapy and mark the sentences true or false. Check your answers in groups." The T monitors the students. The T gives the answer key.

Guided discovery (8-10 minutes) • To introduce the zero and first conditionals to the students with the guided discovery method

The T writes two sentences from the interview on the board. One is the zero conditional and the other one is the first conditiinal. 1.When people get angry, they don't know what to do with their anger. 2.When we get there, I'll give you a hammer. The T asks CCQs to clarify the use and meaning of both conditionals. CCQs: 1a.Is Present or Future Simple used in the sentence? (Present) 1b.Is the sentence about a general situation or a future situation? (General) 2a.Is Present or Future Simple used in the sentence? (Both) 2b.What tense is used after "when"? ( Present) 2c.What tense is used in the second part of the sentence? (Future) 2d.Is the sentence about a general situation or a future situation? The T elicits answers from the students. The T gives the hand outs. The T gives the instructions. ''Match the rules with the examples.'' The T elicits the answers from students. The T focuses the SS's attention on meaning of both conditionals (the first conditional is used to talk about the things in the future, the zero conditional is used to talk about general situation or something which is always true). The T uses back chaining and focuses the SS's attention on the contractions ''I'll'' and ''we'll'', and the weak form of ''ll''. Drill the sentences in choral repetition.

Controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • To have SS apply and practice what they have learnt about the zero and first conditionals

The T gives out the hand outs. The T gives the instructions ''Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verbs in brackets.Mark each sentence zero(o) or first (1st) conditional.Check in pairs.'' The T monitors the students. The T goes over the sentences that are difficult. The T asks to unfold the handout and check their answers.

Productive Activity (3-5 minutes) • To have SS continue practice of the zero and first conditionals.

SS will be given cut-ups. The T gives the instructions. ''Complete the unfinished sentences with two ideas of your own. Check your ideas in group.'' The T asks ICQs to be sure they understand the activity. ICQs: What do you complete the sentences with? (your ideas) How many ideas? (two) Do you check in pairs? (No, in group) The T monitors the students. The T elicits the answers from the students.

Freer practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide further speaking practice on the target language.

The T gives instructions.'' Write down two parts of conditional sentences. One is the zero condition and the other is the first condition. Try to memorize them. Now stand up and form a circle. I say a half conditional sentence and throw the ball to a student and ask him to complete my sentence. The student who completes the sentence, tells his half sentence and throws the ball to another student.'' The T demonstrates the activity with one student.
