Description

In this lesson, student learn about the use of 'for' and 'since' in Present Perfect Simple through jobs. This is followed by a listening fill-out activity about open-plan offices as gist. In MFP stage, the sentences from the gist activity are analyzed for their meaning, form, and pronunciation by guided exercises. Then students use the given information to recreate sentences with for and since. Finally, the class speak about what they have had for some time in pairs before the last stage feedback of the lesson.

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of personal experience

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start by showing the question "How do you do for a living?" Ask what the question asks about Try to get the answer 'jobs' Go to the next slide that shows the same question with six different job illustrations and ask what they do for a living After getting one or two answers, go to the next slide where there is the question "How long have you worked..." Get the answers from one or two students

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students listen to an audio where three people talks about open-space offices There is a filling-gaps activity to highlight the present perfect sentences with 'for' and 'since', which student need to do while listening The answers will be given in a random order if students are not able to do the task or the audio will be replayed

Meaning (6-8 minutes) • To guide students to discover meaning in target language

After filling out the text, the answer sentences will be used to defines meaning through guided exercises The task has 5 questions about two sentences -one with for, one with since Ss will be asked to complete it and share answers in OCFB

Form (6-8 minutes) • To guide students to recognize form in target

Students answer 5 questions about the form of 'form' and 'since' The questions are mostly guided exercises to help them notice the structure rather than sentence structuring

Pronunciation (5-7 minutes) • To guide students to identify pronunciation in target language

Students again see the two sentences from the meaning stage to decide which words are stressed and which are not by listening the audio of the same sentence (cut version) and make the stressed words bold After OCFB, the sentences are analyzed for the contracted words, linkage and intonation

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

There are four questions which include two sentences to give the idea of if the sentence shows the length or the beginning point of the time Students will use these two questions to recreate the sentence with 'for' and 'since' individually OCFB

Free Practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students are asked to talk about the things they have done for some time such as living in the same house or keeping a childhood toy in pairs or groups
