Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice making comparisons

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start the lesson by asking students the following questions: 1. Which is the most difficult to be: a child, a teenager, a middle-aged person, an old person? Why? 2. Which is the most difficult to live with? Why? Give each SS a chance to answer at least one of the questions.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Have SS look at picture from SS book pg. 46 and tell them we will be reading a short article tittled: Living With The Enemy. Ask them who they think the enemy might be? and also, who they think is more difficult to live with, Debbie or Millie? SS will read the article quick (2.5 mins.) to find answers. Check as a group. Next have SS read the article again, this time more carefully and complete activity on handout #1 Check answers with answer key and provide feedback.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Have SS look at highlighted phrases on the article and ask if they know what they are called or what they are used for. This to try and get them to see that these are comparatives and are used to compare two things.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

To cover MFP I will copy the comparative senteces to a jamboard and next to the sentences I will have the rules for each such as: what do we add to one-word syllables, two-syllable adjectives ending in -y, etc. I will use my LA to help me with this stage. I will elicit the answers from the class so they can find it themselves, this will help them remember it more rathen than if I just give it to them.

Controlled Practice (8-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

For my controlled activity I will prepare a gap-fill activity for my SS on google form and send them the link (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc0LjYXrdyoKzxpKDZu2o4mHl1F1pVtIHnQg6U62Dj2tHRNLg/viewform)to complete (4 minutes). Then I will put them into breakout rooms (3 mins) and have them discuss their answers with a partner. Then I will brink them back to the main session and show them the answer key and give feedback.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

For my last activiy, I will have SS compare themselves now with how they were when they were teenagers. They will have to mention how their personalities, appearance, and how their day-to-day life has changed. SS will have 4-5 minutes to discuss then we will share some ideas with the class and I will provide feedback to close the class.
