Description

In this lesson, students will learn to distinguish the difference betweeen present simple vs present continuous tense.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Present Simple Tense V Present Continuous tense in the context of daily routines

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of workplace lexis, daily routine lexis in the context of daily routines, daily life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T will speak with the class a bit informally, ask how their days have been and so on. (3 min) -T will show a photo of a man getting up in the morning to Ss. T will ask CCQ's about the photo and try to get the students to guess the topic of the lesson. (3 min) -After students guess the lesson, T will put Ss in breakout groups so they can discuss their morning routines. Ss will be prompted CCQ's like, when do you get up, do you eat a meal/ breakfast in the morning.. (3 min in breakout groups) -T will then bring Ss back and ask Ss to share what their classmates spoke about. (3 min)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T-Ss - T exposes students to images of an office and elicits to them about how they usually go to work, or school or any other activities. Ss-T -Ss respond and give examples information of their daily routines or lives using simple present. -T-Ss T drills these examples of present simple and present continuous to the students. Ss-T Ss repeat these sentences and make up their own in both tenses.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Examples of the structure are shown to the students of both tenses T-Ss. The teacher elicits these to the Ss. Ss-T Ss repeat them until T is satisfied that they remember them.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T-Ss T gives students writing exercises and some vocabulary so they understand the context Ss-T Ss complete these exercises to understand the forms and give more examples. T-Ss T asks questions about the structure and more CCQ's about the context

Semi-Controlled Practice (15-20 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T-Ss T gives the students worksheet for students to ilicit the proper tense. Ss-T Students complete exercises PW. T will complete first couple of questions with Ss to make sure they know how to do it. Ss work in pairs and answer the exercises and check (6 min) T-Ss T gives feedback to students on the exercise for control and CCQ's

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T-Ss T gives students writing exercises and some vocabulary so they understand the context Ss-T Ss complete these exercises to understand the forms and give more examples. T-Ss T asks questions about the structure and more CCQ's about the context

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T-Ss Teacher gives students some more semi-controlled practice. Ss-T Ss respond with the correct form of the tenses with their own answers. T-Ss T checks other vocabulary they may be unsure about

Feedback (5-10 minutes) • Give feedback to the student in regards to their work, check understanding.

T will put Ss into groups once more so they may share their writing with other students. Ss will have a chance to compare their work during this time. T will ask students to share their writing with the class. T will then provide feedback as written on a slide - T will point out both errors and good use of English grammar that they noticed students using throughout the lesson.
