Little Red Riding Hood - Story Telling
Elementary Stage - Beginners level

Description

In this lesson, Students should be able to determine the relation between using facial features and how they function the five senses. Students will learn new vocabulary words used in The Little Red Riding Hood short story. The lesson starts with a game ( magic bag) to guess and feel what is inside the bag like : Tree , red cape, saw, basket, dinosaur, wolf, bed, house, fox). This will be followed by asking more questions to elicit more information from the students about this story. Then will start with a controlled practice exercise through writing the word under the correct picture where the students learn new vocabulary words then another exercise to read the sentence and put it in the correct order. Finally a free practice exercise to create and write an alternative ending to the story and draw simple drawings according to their answers. In case there is an extra time, Students will be given another free practice exercise by drawing their favorite character in two large groups. Announce the winner and prizes.

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, Ss will read for gist and detail about the facial body parts . Ss will be able to clarify and practice the meaning of the new vocabulary words, develop the students' creation skills by writing alternative ending in the context of the Little Red Riding Hood short story.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To analyze and memorize the story events and sequence , To let students practice their listing and reading and to enhance their writing skills by writing short sentences.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To grab the students attention, Teacher gets magic bag with some items (Wolf, Bed, Basket, Doll, House, Tree, Red cape, Fox, Dinosaur, Saw) Let the students sit on the carpet in a circle, put the magic bag in the middle. Start asking the students one by one to put their hands in the magic bag, and try to guess what item did they touch before they get it out. Then after guessing, pull this item out of the bag and name it.

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher asks students to go back to their seats while the teacher is sticking the Little Red Riding Hood word mat on the white board Teacher start asking students some questions about the pictures in the word mat -What can you see here? -What kind of food can you see? -How do we see? -How many eyes do we have? -How do we hear? -How many ears do we have? Point to the girl and ask -What is she holding? -What is she wearing? - What color are her clothes? Point to the wolf and ask -What is this animal? -Try to guess what story are we talking about today? - Did you watch this story before? -Which character is your favorite? Describe each picture and encourage the children to guess which one you are referring to. Teacher ask Ss to predict: What will the Little Red Riding Hood do with the wolf? How the wolf will act at the end of the story? Who do you think will save the Little Red Riding Hood? Will she be eaten by the wolf? Who will save the Little Red Riding Hood Granny from the wolf? Is the Wolf good or bad character?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (14-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Teacher gives each student a highlighter Teacher gives the students direct instructions to highlight the words they see in the word mat while they are reading Teacher gives the Ss the Little Red Riding Hood short story handout, let Ss read it - use flash cards to introduce and explain the vocabulary words. -Ask Ss if they know any of these words? -Teacher give out the vocabulary activity sheet , Then ask Ss to write each word under the right picture. -Ss works individually. - SS check answers together and then teacher feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss will be divided into pairs ( According to their level , intermediate next to beginner) Teacher gives Ss direct instructions to focus on the story sequence then play the Little Red riding Hood short story video Video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivg_Yc-YDYo After watching the video , -Teacher gives the students the sequencing activity sheet --Ss will be given instructions to read the sentences and put them in the right order -Ss check answers together -Teacher feedback

Post-Reading/Listening (9-11 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Divide Ss into 2 groups , each group sit on a table. -Ask each group to plan an alternative version of the Little Red Riding Hood short story through answering the given questions in the activity sheet and draw suitable simple pictures according to their answers give the Ss the activity sheet Ss starts their work -Whole class feedback - T gives prizes to all students for their hard work ( Little red riding hood face masks ) -According to the timing ( as it will vary from one activity to another depending on the students' skills and abilities,) In case of having extra time, teacher will give each group one A3 paper and some crayons and ask each group to draw their favorite character.
