Description

In this lesson ss will review (there was/were) in the form of affirmative , negative sentences and questions.They will be exposed to the target language in a spoken text.Finally ss will practice the language in pairs.

Main Aims

  • To practice listening for specific information.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Focus ss' attention on the Powerpoint pictures and try to elicit as much information from them as possible. For example: - Do you remember Stephen? - What is his Job? - Where is he now? - What is the name of the hotel?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text.

The ss will listen to an interview with Stephen about seeing a ghost in Gosforth Hall Hotel. Ex. 3 a Instructions: - Tell ss: You will listen to Stephen describing what happened. Did he see the ghost? Ex. 3 b Instructions: - Teacher will show the report of Stephen to ss on his hand then tell them : You will listen again and then complete this (pointing to the handout): - Teacher will demonstrate 1 and 2 with ss. - Ss will walk around the classroom to check the answer key.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- Tell ss to complete sentences from the article - which was given to them by the teacher before him - with was, wasn't, were, or weren't. - Demonstrate number one with ss. - Ss will walk around the classroom to check answers key.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- Write two sentences one with was (singular) and the other with were (plural). - There was an old TV. - There were only three guests. - Elicit the grammar names. - What is (was)? verb. - What verb is it? to be. - Is it in the past, preset or future? past. - What is (guests)? - Is singular or plural? plural. There + was/were + noun (singular/plural)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- Demo the task as a class using open pairs then get the ss to work in closed pairs. Provide handouts - Monitor ss while they are doing the task without any kind of help.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

- Have a picture from (Google Image) with lots of furniture show it on the projector for 30 seconds, let ss to tell me the names of things. Then ask ss to remember what was on the picture and write down. Instructions: - You are going to write just short phrases. ICQs: - Are you going to write long sentences? No. - Show the picture again if they did not remember many phrases. - Demonstrate with 2 or 3 ss ( Now tell me what was in the room?) with strong ss. - Divide ss in pairs Instructions: Now work /tell your partner (What was/were in the room?). ICQs: Are you going to write or speak? speak. - Monitor and collect wrong or right examples during the activity. - Show the picture to let then now if their memory was correct or not.
