Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have been introduced to the the meaning, form and pronunciation of functional language for showing interest and asking follow-up questions in the context of a conversation about the weekend, and will have practiced these in a controlled and freer exercises.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice of functional language for showing interest and asking follow-up questions in the context of a conversation about the weekend
  • To provide listening practice for gist in the context of a conversation about the weekend

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll use pictures, prediction and personalization to engage Ss with the topic.Screenshare a G-Slide, point at the picture and ask Ss: What do you see? (People talking to each other). Point at the slide and tell Ss that it's Monday morning. Where are they? Are they at work or at home? (at work). What are they talking about? What do you talk about on Monday morning? Write down Ss' ideas on the whiteboard, try to elicit 'weekend'. Ask

Exposure and highlighting (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation. To draw students' attention to the target language

Send Ss a G-Form link: - Look at the pictures and read A-D. - Listen to the conversation and match the names with A-D. - Press 'submit' when you finish. ICQ: Do you need to match the names with texts A-D? (yes) Do you need to press 'submit'? (yes) Play audio, check the answers on G-Form. Screen share the answers on G-Slide. OCFB. Clarification (10-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: I'll ask Ss to complete a task on G-Form that will help elicit the Meaning. Send a G-Form with an audio script and highlighted TL. Tell Ss: Look at the underlined phrases in the text. Answer the questions. 1. Oh, right means... -I'm not surprised (correct answer) -I'm surprised 2. You're joking! means... -I'm very surprised (correct answer) -I'm happy for you 3. What was it like? is a question you can ask someone who ... -stayed home at the weekend -was ill at the weekend -went to see a movie (correct answer) 4. Who did you go with? is a question you can ask someone who... -came back from vacation (correct answer) -was ill at the weekend -worked at the weekend Form: Screen share and point out at the audio script: FCQs: Look at the phrases for showing interest Pronunciation: Send Ss a G-Form link: Listen to the phrases, choose the correct stress pattern, A or B, submit the form. FCQs: Do you need to listen to sentence stress? (yes) Do you need to choose A or B? (yes) Do you need to press 'submit'? (yes) Play audio for each phrase 1-2 times. Check Ss answers. ProvOCFB

Controlled Practice (5-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Share a G-Form link with the task: Choose A or B to complete the dialogue. Ss have 2 minutes to choose the right answers. ICQs: How much time do you have? (2 min). Do you need to press 'submit'? (yes) Answers: 1. I won $5,000 yesterday A: You're joking! (correct answer) B: Oh, dear 2. I worked at the weekend and didn't go out A: Oh, nice B: Oh, right (correct answer) 3. I stayed at home last Friday A: What was it like? B: What did you do? (correct answer) 4. I went to France for a week A: What did you do? B: Who did you go with? (correct answer) 5. Check the submitted answers on G-Form, screen share the answers on G-Slide, ask Ss to say the answer using the correct intonation and stress. OCFB.

Free Practice (15-17 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Tell Ss we are going to practice speaking. Send a G-Slide link with a task: 1) Make notes on what you did these times (Ss have 1 minute to prepare their answers): - Last weekend - Last week - Yesterday - Before this lesson - On Friday evening 2) Work in groups. Tell each other about these times. Ask follow-up questions. Demonstrate an example: What did you do last weekend? - I went to the concert. Oh, nice. What was it like? - It was great! Who did you go with? - With my sister 3) Remember 3 things about your partner Create 2-3 BORs (depending on number of Ss) and send them to the BOR for about 4-5 minutes. Then shuffle them and give them an opportunity to talk to the other group of Ss. ICQs: How much time do you have to prepare your answers? (1 min) How much time do you have to discuss the questions? (5 minutes) Monitor Ss in their BORs, take notes of good language and mistakes. Write it down to share with Ss after the speaking practice. After monitoring Ss ask them if they remember 3 things about other Ss. Provide feedback on the content and the language they used, try to elicit the correct answers and use peer-editing.
