Grammar lesson plan (present simple tense)
Grade 2 level

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have had clarification on the meaning, form and pronunciation of Present simple tense in the context of talking about facts and daily routine, and practiced this in a controlled and freer exercise.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide more group work and activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show the students some pictures on the smartboard of daily routines like washing face\ brushing teeth and ask them to talk about daily habits using time words like (everyday\ every week\ On Saturdays). Then I share with them my daily routine too to get involved in the context.

Clarification/ Presentation (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

start to elicit the form and the meaning from the students. write the form down in the rules section of the whiteboard and let it be clear with big font. Repeat the form and when we should add -s for the verb and use the drilling technique till they memorize it. Mention the time words for the present tense like (usually\every day, week, year\ always\sometimes) and drill them with the students till they know how to identify the present simple. and ask them for more examples to write in the middle of the board to let them be proud of their tries to answer and feel more confident. Praise them for participating and sharing ideas to encourage the shy ones to raise their hands and see their answers on the board also.

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Get students to practice the present simple in a controlled exercise, like fill-in blanks or choose the right answer from their workbook. Also, we can do this in pairs or groups and I will set a timer for 10-15mins then give them feedback at the end.

Production\ Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Get the students to speak about their regular routine using full sentences. This activity should be done in pairs then ask everyone about their partner's daily routine. Note: they can use paper and pen to take notes. As a teacher, I will set the timer on 8-10 mins, move around the class to monitor, write the errors for feedback, offer help for those who need it and make sure no one is talking in Arabic. Finally, give the students feedback and correct their errors then recap the main points by asking questions about the conversation.
