Main Aims

  • To provide practice of past simple in the context of former life incidents

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a statement in the context of individual information

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll start the session by introducing the target language by some of my own examples and personal statements and while doing so i will be asking some examples from the students to already get them engaged in the new grammar point and then each person will be given a HO to fill in so I can see if they have any prior knowledge about the topic and then the test will be collected.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The students will be asked to listen to two separate texts and note down any verbs that they hear in each text. After that they need to fill in the gaps for the Text A and then gist read the Text B and underline any verbs that they can find in there. they will compare their answers in pairs then they can use the examples in the book and the text itself to make a few sentences and work them in pairs.

Highlighting (1-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

In this part I'll use the two practiced texts to highlight the differences in meaning and the usage of the past simple and present simple

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

In this stage I'll clarify the form and write it on the board to make sure there is no doubt and then ask students individually to make their own examples and check out if there are any points missing or if there are some vague parts that would need more explaining or training. then the pronunciation goal will be clarified and furthermore Audio 2 will be played and students will be participated to differentiate the types.

Controlled and semi-controlled Practice (8-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In this stage the students will be asked to fill the gaps in text C according to the words given in exercise 4 then they'll listen to Audio 3 and check their answers themselves. then they will do the exercise 6 in pairs and try to give complete answers to each question as well as filling the gaps , afterwards they'll be asked to do them in open pairs as a mini dialogue so any possible mistakes could be corrected. In the end they will listen to Audio 4 and asked to categorize the three different pronunciations of -ed in past simple verbs , and then voluntarily they can read each read one column to be sure of the answers

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

students will work in pairs to first complete the practice 1 and then they will have a couple of minutes to work with those sentences and also examples of their own to talk with their partners but after that each person will be asked to share what they've learned about their partner with the class. As the final task i'll give the HO back to the students and have them correct their own papers.
