Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will be exposed to some target vocabulary (adjectives ed/ing). They will learn the difference between these adjectives which will help them eventually describe their feelings and what causes those feelings. Ss will utilize these words through a controlled practice followed by a semi controlled practice for speaking.

Materials

Main Aims

  • The main aim will be about adjectives ending in -ed -ing by using the theme which has been set by the previous teachers.

Subsidiary Aims

  • The sub-aim is going to be speaking, using the input which Ss will acquire through the controlled practice stage.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows Ss a picture that comes with the text they have read during the previous lesson. Teacher: * projects the picture and asks Ss if they know this picture and what it is about. * elicits words about feelings and expressions in this picture

Pre-teaching vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To help Ss understand the target words and utilize them in context later.

Teacher: * shows Ss pictures of different adjectives (ing/ed) without showing the words directly to Ss. * elicits answers from Ss by asking what the words are about, how people feel and what causes these feelings (CCQs)

Guided discovery (5-7 minutes) • To give Ss the opportunity to use their own logic and discover the rule themselves

Teacher: * shows the HO, and by answering the questions, Ss will discover what the difference is between adjectives ending with -ed and -ing * asks Ss to check their answers with their partners and give justifications * nominates groups to answer the questions

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher: * shows the hand outs and tells Ss that they have to: 1) circle the correct answer. 2) be regrouped in groups of two or three. 3) check their answers with their group members when they finish * hands Ss HO * asks Ss to listen to an audio to check their answers * chooses Ss randomly to give their answer OR (in case the audio doesn't function) Teacher: * tells Ss to look under their tables and check the answer key * chooses Ss randomly to give their answer

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher: * groups Ss in pairs * tells Ss to do a role play. Ss have to interview each other using TL * explains that Ss will get a HO to help them with the questions * gives an example in front of the Ss * gives them a HO to use for the questions * monitors Ss

Feedback and Error Correction (4-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on Ss production and use of language

Teacher: * monitors Ss while they are doing the task * writes down some common mistakes made by Ss * goes over the mistakes with the class as delayed feedback
